Sunday, I went to Bayview Wisconsin near the Apostle Islands to see what kind of photo possibilities there were for me and to take pictures. Well I found a very nice little town and nothing that I was interested in shooting. I realize I need to take the ferry to Madeline Island and then explore and most likely rent a kayak to access the other islands.

What should have happened is that I had my Holga with lots of film and stopped and shot along the way. Lots of open fields and trees and lots of cool clouds. Instead I had to keep driving and I didn't bring the Holga, only the Fuji. I should have stopped anyway and shot with the Fuji.

Got to remember to stop and shoot when things look right instead of going to some supposed destination with the blinders on.

If I want a real adventure--I think in the winter you can drive to Madeline Island on the ice! That would be amazingly fun. Then you can hike out to the other islands. Of course the ice has got to be thick, which means very cold weather. I think this still happens--worth checking into.

I'll begin offering 11x14 inch prints matted to 16x20 and 16x20 inch prints matted to 22x26 or so. Not sure about the bigger size. 20x24, which is a standard size is just to small of a mat for 16x20.

This is the first time I've listed this Big Bend photo on ebay. It's currently in my 5x7 99 cent sale. This is also available matted in my ebay store.

Look, here's one of my photos on someone's blog. This is probably the most popular photo to be lifted.

Okay, I'm back in business on ebay. There are three main reasons why I stopped selling on ebay (it was only for two weeks...) 1. Reading negative ebay posts on wetcanvas.com related to the self representing artist category, which I rarely list in. 2. Thinking, I only sold $200 worth of photos this month, instead of "Yeah, I sold $200 this month, that's great!!! 3. Just in general getting frustrated with all the changes ebay is making.

So I've changed my view on ebay. I realize I need to be loyal to the people who have already bought from me.

Well, I've decided to get back into the ebay thing for selling photos. Over the last month I've been scoping out the local art fairs for next year and it's been kind of making me crazy since I'm selling anywhere. Although ebay isn't perfect there are some great collectors who are buying photos and some have bought from me. That's the main reason are the people who have bought from me and might want something else somewhere sometime. So I'll have my ebay store back up and have a link to it sometime tonight I guess. I think I'll just list super cheap 5x7s and sell mainly out of the store. I'll also be offering 11x14 and 16x20 prints sometime soon.

Soft Financing Causes Arts Groups to Make Hard Choices

I feel this lack of funding for arts organization is very bad for our culture. The trickle down effects are huge. Obviously, less money for the performers and artists involved with these groups. There will be less opportunity for people to see something that might open their eyes to art--take classes, make art, go see art/performances. So the downward cycle will continue. As time goes on there will be less people to champion the Arts. There will be less and less, especially controversial art.

Our culture is being spoon fed what to think. It also seems to my "out of the mainstream" sensibilities, that most people don't want to be seen as different or odd. But if they do want to be hip or different or odd or cool, they take their cues from the mainstream--mainly TV--here's another downward cycle. Hey those KFC commercials are pretty hip... Get your tongue pierced... Get tiger striped seat covers for your car from Target... Wear a crazy hat... Buy a hip hop record...

If people are willing to be spoon fed on what they think and do, they sure aren't going to try something new or arty or cultural, at least outside of what the TV or the internet has to offer or says to do. So, with the decrease in funding for arts organizations and their drop in revenue, does this spell the end of large arts organizations? Who knows, but it doesn't look like things are going to take a turn for the better anytime soon.

It just seems people are either unwilling or afraid to take a chance on things. It's kind of frustrating and sad because when you're trying to sell your art your thinking becomes more mainstream relating to what will sell. I do this. When I think of selling photos I shoot differently--looking for sellable images. My northern Minnesota photos are a perfect example. While I love it up there and I do like these images, the only reason I took and take these pictures is to sell.

My photos that I really identify with and feel are the most successful for myself are usually taken with the Holga. Two that I think are successful and sell well are Below the Falls and Scrub Clouds Mountain. Some of my favorite images sell well and others are bombs in the sales department. Some that don't sell well are very fascinating to people. I get lots of compliments and questions about the image because they can't figure it out, but in the end it rarely sells. Two of these are Water Grate Sky, and East Texas Reststop 2.

In a Digital Era, the Darkroom Is Fading as a Photographic Hub
From the tone of this article, it does appear an era has ended.

Wacko in Art Attack - Here's an interesting story about someone hanging their own political work in some famous museums.

The New School University in New York City is planning to demolish their darkroom. Here's a petition: Save The Darkroom Petition that's being signed in hopes of stopping this. Diane Arbus, Bernice Abbot and Lisette Modell were some of the famous photographers who used this darkroom.

I've finally decided that I won't list anymore work on ebay. I'm going to concentrate on new photos and making and saving money to do a proper job selling at art fairs starting next spring. It's kind of hard for me to plan so far in the future. My plan is to do a full schedule through the late spring and early fall. I'll see how that goes and plan for the next year. I really would like this to be my fulltime job eventually.

Well my Big Bend photo I have listed on ArtByUs.com got a bid. That is a free listing, I only have to pay Final Value Fees. To get the same number of bids on ebay I have to list in Featured Plus and that costs $20. I think I know where I'll be listing...
Art By Us even sent me some business cards! Also, I did the listing for 14 days and it's gotten 99 page views in about 8 days--way more than a regular ebay listing.

Although artbyus is new and all of the sellers have low feedback, which might make some buyers nervous, most of the sellers have done lots of ebay selling and have excellent ebay feedback so they are very experienced with online selling and shipping. With artbyus you can make payments using paypal.com, just like ebay. About 90% of my sales are paid with paypal.

Good News!

I just got word that I was accepted in the show: 22Miles: Celebrating Minnehaha Creek! It's a juried show that will be held at the Edina Art Center. The opening is Thurs. July 8th, 5-8pm.

Here's the photo that was accepted into the show. I was at the falls last weekend. The water was much lower, even though it's been raining for days, and the branches have been trimmed away. I did get some better shots of the falls. Since there was a plein aire (sp?) artist setting up on the other side of the fence, I too jumped the fence for a closer view. Took these new ones with the Holga. I took another shot of the above photo with the holga, but since the branches are gone and the water was lower, I couldn't duplicate the shot--I just thought it'd be fun to see the difference. I'll get at that film sooner or later...

This from an old barn that's listed on ebay right now.
